Danny Ware: Breakin' Tackles

Danny Ware is a former Dawg standout who nows plays for the New York Giants. The Dawgbone recently caught up with him to discuss his NFL career, memories of playing for the Dawgs and other exciting topics.

How are you involved in social media (facebook, twitter, etc.)?
On Facebook.  On Twitter.  Trying to keep up with the world.  Letting fans see another side of me and getting to know that I’m not just a football player, that I’m also a cool, funny, and laid back dude.  Come follow me at facebook.com/djware28 or twitter.com/djdannyware28

How do you see your involvement in social media in the future?
Only gonna get better.  Hopefully I’ll have it to the point where if you hear my name, you’ll immediately go to my page and see my 1,000,000 fans.

Danny, your NFL career has exceeded the expectations of some in the media.  What did you know about your ability that others might have overlooked?
I know I can be a workhorse.  I can be a guy that carries a ball 15-20 times a game, play special teams etc…It’s been my dream to be a starter so I continue to work to improve myself.  Hopefully, I’ll get that shot soon and people will see what I know I’m capable of rather than what they think I’m capable of.

What is you offseason training regiment and with whom do you train?
CHECK OUT MY FACEBOOK AT FACEBOOK.COM/DJWARE28 AND YOU’LL SEE!  I’ve posted a ton of videos of what I’ve been doing.  I mostly train with Andre Brown.  I’m trying to be a positive influence while he’s recovering for his injury.  It makes me work hard too.  We do runs, agility work, running in pool, working out 4x a week, sauna, hot tub, walking through plays and routes and watching film.  Since the season has been over, we haven’t stopped.

How would you describe your running style?
I would describe it as power when I need it, shifty when I need it, doing everything I can to get yards.  It’s hard running.

What is it like to live in New York City?
Well, I actually live in New Jersey, but being so close to the city is nice because there is always something to do.  It’s beautiful, cold, and grimy all in one.  It’s everything you could want in a city.  You can be on a rooftop lounge, or you can be in Harlem getting soul food.  We have a lot of support and it’s a lot of love here.

Who is the hardest hitter you have faced in the NFL?
Myself!

What’s your best time in the 40?
4.41.

Do you keep up with your former UGA teammates?
I keep up with a couple.  Some of ‘em I can’t find.  Some of them don’t want to be kept up with.  I hit them up on Facebook, or myspace or text messages.  We try to give each other words of encouragement at all times.

What is your greatest memory as a Bulldog?
My first game as a freshman.  Three touchdowns.  135 yards.  First freshman to start since the ‘40s.  Oh, and we won!

Why did you decide to play for UGA?
When I was younger I met Coach Richt and I really liked his philosophy and his dedication to winning.  I couldn’t be happier with my decision to have gone there.

Who do you consider UGA’s biggest rival?
We have three.  South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida.

What’s the best thing about playing football for UGA?
Being close to home and family so they could come watch me play.  It was full of winning traditions and we had a lot of fun doing it.  Every year we went to a great Bowl game and it was just a great atmosphere to play in front of the best fans in the country.

Do you realize that Dawgbone unofficially gave you the nickname “The Funky Vampire” in 2004 after a quote you made regarding your running style? Do you like the nickname?
LOL.  I had never heard that.  I probably wouldn’t use it but if that’s what they want to call me I’ll accept it and be graceful but it won’t be something I’ll have my friends call me.

Are there any former coaches that made a significant impact on your success?
Kirby Smart.

What do you plan on doing after your playing career is over?
Trying to get into either TV shows or making music.  I also just want to be able to make a difference in those less fortunate in life.

If you had to live in another country, which one and why?
Wherever they speak English.

Besides Fried Goat, what is your favorite Rock Band?
Don’t have one.

Coke or Pepsi?
Pepsi.
